18 Best Destination Wedding Locations Around the World

by author David Jones

The Covid-19 pandemic brought along so many changes in our lives. Most of us began working remotely, joining Zoom meetings in our pajama pants, and started cooking all of our meals at home since restaurants were closed for a long time. While the pandemic affected each of us in different ways, there is an entire group of people who spent time, money, and energy planning the most epic of weddings only to have them postponed/ canceled because of all of the pandemic restrictions. If you’re one of those people and you were able to make date changes or cancel at no additional costs, that’s awesome, but most people lost their deposits, making for a very expensive delay in their big day.

Now that most countries are lifting restrictions and the travel industry is starting to boom again, many people have decided to combine a much-needed vacation along with their wedding plans by opting for a destination wedding instead of the more traditional plans. In fact, over 25% of all US-based couples opted for a destination wedding in 2019 – even before the pandemic ever hit. From the Caribbean and Mexico to Hawaii and Europe, we’ve scouted tons of hot places to get hitched and found some of the best places to say ‘I do’ for your post-pandemic destination wedding.

MEXICO

When people think of Mexico, they think of spring break in Cancun or a wild bachelor or bachelorette party in Tijuana. The truth is, the country is filled with so much culture and natural beauty in almost every corner. Ancient historic ruins, lush jungle settings, and thriving nature reserves are just a glimpse of what you could choose from.

Exchange vows on palm-fringed beaches, in the middle of the lush jungle, or in front of historic ancient Mayan ruins for a stunning backdrop you won’t find anywhere else. Couples also opt to go with one of the many nearby Cancun resorts that offer all-inclusive wedding packages. This makes wedding planning super easy because experienced professionals will take care of all the details from wedding licenses to photographers. The best time to get married in Riviera Maya is during the winter months (mid-December through Easter) because the weather is usually sunny and perfect though be warned that it’s also the time it is most crowded.

All this means is that you’ll have your pick of surroundings when choosing a spot for the ceremony. I love the fact that the romantic setting does not end immediately after the ceremony either – spend your honeymoon on private yachts, secluded beaches, and swimming in the cerulean blue waters of the Pacific. Tucson has a landscape that is found in very few places across the United States; imagine having your ceremony in the middle of a rugged desert setting with cacti and deep sunsets. It’s definitely a unique and different setting where you won’t know what to expect but will definitely fall in love with. Don’t forget about the stunning Native American and Mexican textiles or the turquoise jewelry wedding favors you can incorporate into your ceremony! The weather is warm all year long and there are very few chances of rain; you might want to avoid June and July though (especially if you’re having an outdoor ceremony or reception) because temperatures will be above 90 degrees and there is definitely such a thing as too hot.

We’ve identified a ton of different locations for a destination wedding that could be perfect for couples with varying differences – whether it’s an intimate romantic ceremony on the beach or a memorable adventure in the thick of a lush jungle. Other than what you and your spouse-to-be want, as well as the setting you guys would prefer, it also helps to have a budget ready so you know which destination would be best for you financially as well. Couples also like to take their guest list into consideration; for example, if having immediate family and friends at the ceremony is important to you, you might not be able to travel very far because of the costs associated with that (plane tickets, accommodation, catered meals, etc.). After you’ve picked a location based on what you guys like, your budget, and your guest list, you might also want to find a wedding planner in your destination of choice. Many resorts offer dedicated wedding planners on site that will listen to the type of ceremony you want and make your dreams a reality.
