One of the best features that I have come across when using accommodation booking sites is the presence of a reward scheme, which benefits frequent travellers, and the option to search for hostels for those on a more budget-friendly trip. However, Hotwire unfortunately does not have either of these options available on its platform, making it a less likely starting point for either of these types of visitor.

Nevertheless, a useful feature it does have is the ability to select a particular zone on a map in order to see what is available to book in that area. So, for example, if you want to be near the airport, then you can select the zone closest to the airport and the website will filter out all those that are outside that zone. This makes up, in the most part, for the limited number of drop down filters, which don’t include as many of some of the more well-known websites, although still feature the basics, such as price and guest rating.

The site combines both its own verified guest reviews alongside Tripadvisor reviews, allowing for plenty of information from previous visitors. There is also abundant details on each property and the surrounding area, including a ‘Where to Eat’ and ‘Nearby Things to Do’ section, something that I have found particularly valuable when choosing somewhere to stay using Hotwire.

The website is great for bundling packages together to include flights and car rental alongside accommodation, and its Hot Rates listings provide great discounts of up to 30% on selected properties. However, if you like to benefit from reward programmes or have the option of finding a cheap room in a hostel dorm, then this might not be the booking site most suited to you.

Pros
  • Option to filter accommodation based on zone
  • Detailed information on surrounding areas
Cons
  • No rewards scheme for frequent users
  • Cannot view availability of hostels
  • Limited number of filters
